アントン・パーヴロヴィチ・チェーホフ Anton Chekhov(1860 – 1904)

ロシアの劇作家、短編小説家。モスクワ大学医学部卒業。学生の頃は、生活費を得るために、ユーモア短編を雑誌に寄稿していた。本格的な作家活動を始めたのは、大学を卒業してから数年後のこと。後に、長編小説が主流だった当時のロシアに、チェーホフは短編小説で革命を起こした。

また劇作家としても名を馳せ、数々の名作戯曲を生み出した。代表作は、『かもめ』、『三人姉妹』など。
