男性の名はチャールズ・ラムジーさん。報道によると、自宅で食事をとっていたラムジーさんは、隣家から助けを求める叫び声に気づき、ドアを蹴破って女性と児女を助け出したという。なんとその女性は、10年前から失踪していたアマンダ・ベリーさんだった。
通報で駆け付けた警察は、ベリーさんほか2人の女性を保護し、住人のアリエル・カストロ容疑者を拉致・監禁などの容疑で逮捕した。

全米がこぞってラムジーさんを英雄視する中、当の本人は「そうじゃない」と謙虚な姿勢をみせる。ラムジーさんはCNNの取材で、「去年の時点で救えていたと思うんだ。こんなヒーロー的な感じじゃなくて」と、もっと早く気づけなかった悔しさを表した。
