There’s no such thing as perfect writing,
just like there’s no such thing as perfect despair
-『風の歌を聴け(Hear the Wind Sing)』

(Norwegian Wood):

If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking

Don’t feel sorry for yourself, only assholes do that

Nobody likes being alone that much. I don’t go out of my way to make friends, that’s all.
It just leads to disappointment

The dead will always be dead,
but we have to go on living

What makes us the most normal is knowing that we’re not normal

Death was not the opposite of life. It was already here, within my being, it had always been here, and no struggle would permit me to forget that

Death is not the opposite of life but an innate part of life

海辺のカフカ(Kafka on the Shore):

Memories warm you up from the inside.
But they also tear you apart

If you remember me,
then I don’t care if everyone else forgets

Closing your eyes isn’t going to change anything. Nothing’s going to disappear just because you can’t see what’s going on. In fact, things will even be worse the next time you open your eyes. That’s the kind of world we live in

Narrow minds devoid of imagination. Intolerance, theories cut off from reality, empty terminology, usurped ideals, inflexible systems. Those are the things that really frighten me. What I absolutely fear and loathe

Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn’t something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside of you

You really will have to make it through that violent, metaphysical, symbolic storm. No matter how metaphysical or symbolic it might be, make no mistake about it: it will cut through flesh like a thousand razor blades. People will bleed there, and you will bleed too

Once the storm is over you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about

There’s only one kind of happiness, but misfortune comes in all shapes and sizes

It’s like Tolstoy said.
Happiness is an allegory, unhappiness a story

Every one of us is losing something precious to us. Lost opportunities, lost possibilities, feelings we can never get back. That’s part of what it means to be alive

In everybody’s life there’s a point of no return. And in a very few cases, a point where you can’t go forward anymore. And when we reach that point, all we can do is quietly accept the fact. That’s how we survive

Perhaps most people in the world aren’t trying to be free.
They just think they are. It’s all an illusion

If they really were set free, most people would be in a real pickle. You’d better remember that. People actually prefer not being free

People soon get tired of things that aren’t boring, but not of what is boring

In dreams begins responsiblities
